Accessibility Statement
Many of the people who use Church Member Software are retired volunteers. We want it to work for everyone, including people who find small text hard to read or who use a screen reader, keyboard or magnifier.
This statement covers this website, the app churches sign in to, the member area and the emails we send. Our aim is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What we’ve done
- Text is never smaller than 16px. Most text is 17 or 18px, and you can zoom in to 400% without losing anything.
- Text is dark on a light background, with strong contrast. Main text is well above the level WCAG asks for.
- Links are underlined, and buttons are large: at least 48px tall, so they’re easy to tap.
- Pages are built from standard links, buttons and form boxes, so they work with a keyboard alone. Whatever has the keyboard’s attention has a thick blue outline.
- Every page has a clear heading structure and a title saying where you are. The website, the app and the member area have a “Skip to main content” link.
- Every form box has a label above it, not just faint text inside it. Errors say what’s wrong in words, not only in colour.
- Screenshots have written descriptions, and a link to a larger view. Charts have the same figures in a table for screen readers.
- Nothing moves, flashes or plays on its own, and nothing important is hidden in tabs or sliding panels.
- Pages work on a small phone screen. On a phone, the menu is a button labelled “Menu”, not just an icon.
- Members sign in with a link sent to their email, so there’s no password to remember.
- Emails use large text, one clear button and a plain-text version for email programs that need it.
What isn’t perfect yet
- Wide tables on small screens. Some tables, such as the people list and the rota, have more columns than fit on a phone. They scroll sideways inside their own box, while the rest of the page stays put.
- Two-step sign-in. Administrators, staff and treasurers need a code from an authenticator app to protect church records. If that’s difficult for someone, a counter or group leader role doesn’t need it, and backup codes can be kept on paper.
- Sign-in links expire. For security, member area sign-in links work for 15 minutes. If one runs out, you can ask for another straight away.
- HMRC’s Gift Aid spreadsheet. Gift Aid claims download in the spreadsheet layout HMRC sets. We can’t change that layout.
- Emails churches write. We control how emails look, but not the words or links a church puts in them. The editor encourages headings and clear link text.
- No independent audit yet. We haven’t yet had the site checked by an accessibility specialist, or tested it with people who use screen readers. We plan to, and we’ll update this page when we have.
How we checked
On 18 October 2026 we checked 50 pages, including the website, the app and the member area. We tested them at a phone width of 320px, which is the same as zooming in to 400% on a computer. We looked for missing labels and descriptions, headings out of order, buttons and links without names, and anything that made the page scroll sideways. We fixed everything we found. Colours were checked against the WCAG contrast levels.
Tell us about a problem
If something is hard to use, or you need information in a different format, we want to know. A way to contact us is coming soon. In the meantime, our help centre has step-by-step guides with screenshots for every part of the app.
If you’re a church member and something in your church’s member area is hard to use, your church office can also help. They can update your details for you.
