What Is the Role of Treasurer in Church?
A church treasurer looks after the church’s money on behalf of its trustees, who might be the church council, deacons or elders.
The day-to-day work includes recording income and spending, banking collections, paying bills and claiming Gift Aid. The treasurer prepares budgets and regular reports, and produces the annual accounts for an independent examiner or auditor where one is needed. They also make sure financial controls are followed, such as two people counting every collection.
The treasurer doesn’t carry the responsibility alone, though. The trustees as a whole are responsible for the church’s finances, and the treasurer reports to them.
