What Are the Guidelines for Churches Regarding Social Media Use?
Most denominations publish their own social media guidance, so start there. The common principles are the same.
- Ask before posting photos where people can be recognised. With children, get a parent’s agreement and don’t name them.
- Never share pastoral details, prayer requests or anyone’s contact information without permission.
- Keep church accounts in the church’s name, with at least two people able to sign in.
- Follow your safeguarding policy on messaging, and avoid private one-to-one messages with young people.
- Moderate comments, and keep closed groups closed.
Remember that anything posted publicly can be shared far beyond your congregation.
